This is Our Family: Mel & Chris’s Story

Mel, Chris and their Ultra Limited just completed well over 16,000km around the United States.  Having shipped the Ultra all the way to LA from Brisbane, they embarked on a remarkable trip that makes you yearn for the open highway and the adventures that you just know are awaiting . . .

By Mel & Chris

When does a journey begin? Is it when the ticket is booked? The plane is boarded? Or even when the decision is first made to take that trip?

We decided early 2013 to undertake another motorbike road trip across the USA in 2014.

It was decided to buy a second hand Harley over there, do the ride and then ship it back to Australia, but where? We looked at various dealers and locations because wherever we purchased is where the journey would begin. It was vague for a long time.

In September 2013 I opened the Harley-Davidson website home page and there were the 2014 models. I was excited with my first look at the new Ultra . . . at last new ideas, particularly linked brakes, one touch latches on the luggage, entertainment system with built in GPS, better handling with a new front end, more room and comfort.  But best of all the liquid /air cooling of the engine.

A test ride in December, a yes to Morgan & Wacker Harley-Davidson, delivery in February and the new Ultra Limited was on the road and it did not disappoint. This was the bike to be shipped to the USA for the road trip.

For us this journey began the day I opened up the Harley-Davidson web page.

Google Maps will tell you that if you travel from The Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica to The Atlantic Ocean, Outer Banks you will travel 4,425 Klms on the quickest route. We rode 16,264 Klms which is nearly four times there and back.

After four trips to The States, Mel finally made it to Milwaukee, the home of Harley-Davidson.

Good Old Sturgis.

We have just had two wonderful nights at Mesa Verde National Park, what a awesome experience! We just love the history and the Lodge we stayed at was pretty good also.  The climb down and back up again from Cliff Palace was interesting to say the least!!!

We have had an amazing four days, with four highs:
1 We have attended the Happy Together Tour concert Starring The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night), Mark Farner (formerly of Grand Funk Railroad) and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. Mel thought he was in seventh heaven, we were only 6 rows from the stage.
2. We rode up the Pikes Peak Highway to over 14,110 ft.
3. We walked across the royal gorge bridge (USAs highest bridge)
4. We watched the Colorado Springs Hot Air Balloon Glo

The start of Route 66.

We arrived at The Country Inn, Elizabeth, New Jersey on 5 October after spending 85 days zig zagging from the West Coast of America to the East Coast of America. We have travelled in total 17,981 Klms.

My dad has always said that our family has a guardian angel watching over us.  There has been a number of occasions on this trip when when Mel and I been amazed at our luck or things that have happened.  One such thing was that we had wonderful weather in New York, the morning we were leaving it rained.

I think dad is right!
